Goodbye, Sudden Valley

We have officially closed on our house and thus it is time to say goodbye to Sudden Valley.

Mickey and I bought this house together, our first home, shortly before our wedding. It didn't take long before we added a cat, then a dog, another cat, and eventually two children (and we already had Macy too). With the growth of our family our wonderful house started to feel a little cramped. And Sudden Valley started to feel just a little too remote.

We wanted a fence. Plants the deer would not eat. A driveway and roads that could be navigated in the snow. Street lights. Trick or Treating on Halloween. More of a "neighborhood" feel. A mailbox within walking distance. A less confusing address. A closer proximity to town. Most importantly, we wanted more space.

We are loving our new home. But I have to admit I feel a twinge of sadness every time I think about the one we have left, and now no longer call our own.

We met you in May of 2004 at the Humane Society. You were the only dog who could have cared less that there were humans walking around.  While all the other dogs barked and barked at us, you lay on the floor curled up and awake, yet quiet and uninterested.  We almost passed you by but after mentioning you to one of the employees they said you were a good boy and that we should take you out for a walk.  Once outside you perked right up and wanted to sniff everything and explore and didn't seem at all like the dog you were inside.  We were hooked. I gave my daughter a box of those Valentine’s candy hearts to eat and every time she crunches down on one it is like a spear going through my head.  Next time, remember to go for the softer ones.  I hate noise. Hate it.  Like Jeckyll and Hyde hate it. I hate crunching, chewing, snapping, typing, clicking, clacking, humming, popping, sucking, clipping, clicking, tapping.  I have an intense fear of being stuck in an elevator with a bunch of people snapping gum. Or eating popcorn. Or typing on keyboards. Or clipping nails.  Oh, the torture! I was thrilled when I saw an article in Time Magazine recently that indicated I was not alone. But it also indicated that perhaps the best way to conquer the phobia is to face it head on – by being exposed to those noises you hate the most until you mentally figure out that it’s just noise, accept it, and move on.  I do feel part of my problem is mental, because, with the exception of those candy ...

Except Death and Taxes and School Pick Up Problems

Dear you, Hi there! We haven't met so I thought I would introduce myself.  I am a mom of two, a fifth and a third grader, at the school our kids attend.  You might recognize my car, as you drive by it nearly every day when you pass me (and plenty other parents) 10 minutes before school gets out to park at the very front of the pick up line. In a spot that is not a spot. Genius!  I mean why should you get to school early like many of us other parents do and park appropriately in the pick up lane when you can just come nearly at the last minute, go around a line of 30 vehicles, and park in a spot that is not a spot? Why didn't I think of that? You probably have special circumstances.  I'm sure you think that NOBODY else in the pick up lane,  many of whom have been sitting there waiting for 30-45 minutes have ANYTHING better that they could be doing with their time.
